Born in Moscow, raised in Tel Aviv and currently based in Berlin, Mary Ocher has become a prominent character in the European underground thanks to her quirky voice, unsettling lyrics and slightly out-of-this-world live performances.
Her recent album “Eden”, was produced by Canadian rock & roll guru, King Khan and came out in Europe on Buback and Haute Areal in spring 2013 and on two US labels in mid 2014 – as she toured North America on a 2 month/50 date tour. Upon returning, the work with the new-tribalism double drummered act Your Government went into 2nd gear, they’re currently working on a debut release.

Ocher has also directed music videos, documentaries and video art, alongside publishing photography, poetry and social-critique.

Singer-songwriter-poet-artist, Mary Ocher is working on her new album, which will be premiered live at the SO36 during the “Ich Bin Ein Berliner Festival” this friday.

Coffee or Tea?
Vanilla flavored Rooibos :)

Vegetables or Meat?
Veggies!!

Subway, Car or Bike?
Bike all the way!

Pub or Club?
Neither.

Digital or Analog?
Analog, when possible.

PC or MAC?
PeeCee.

The Beatles or The Rolling Stones?
The Stones!

What are you doing first after waking up?
Checking emails (congrats! that’s how you know you’re addicted to work!).

What turns you on / off?
Haha. That changed daily!

What were you like in school?
Asking too many questions.

What is the first record you bought, and when? Backstreet’s Back. 1997. And it was a CD.

What is your embarrassing favorite song?
I’m not one bit embarassed of the music i like, perhaps the poppiest would be Precious Little Diamond by Fox The Fox. I think it’s great.

What don´t you like about yourself?
I think i’m pretty happy with myself, it’s the world around us I´m not too fond of.

If you could learn a random skill, what would you learn?
Perhaps a skill that would allow me to design a device that assists the blind in recognizing the space around them in bouncing sound waves off of objects, like a bat would. i wonder whether this device is already being tested. (answer. yes: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/next/body/bioinspired-assistive-devices/)

Which instruments did you learn?
The block flute, for 5 whole years.

What are you good in besides doing music?
Trouble!

What do you like a) most and b) least about being a musician/producer/dj…?
Traveling to new parts of the world is by far my favorite. There’s not much i dislike about being a musician, it’s such a terribly privileged thing to be. Move around all the time, meet wonderful people, meet people you’ve only read about when you were a teen. Holy shit! i love it! Being away from home and not having much time to be with friends is of course the sacrifice you have to make; but there’s always periods to make up for that.

What are you currently working on?
The debut album with Your Government, mostly. we’re terribly excited!

Is there anything else you want to say?
We’d like to thank everyone that joined the new album’s crowdfunding campaign – you made it possible and it’s going to blow your minds!”
